Renaissance Leadership 2019 Digital Practice Review

2019 was another record year at Renaissance as we notched up over 100 executive searches during the 12 months. This total reflects our investment in new Partners and Researchers, and the continued buoyancy of the digital technology sector.

Funds continue to pour into the sector and in 2019 it has allowed us to complete European assignments in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Berlin, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Milan.

We continue to work with leading global investors, entrepreneurs and founders as they look to scale up and build world class leadership teams.

Highlights include 11 leadership hires at Cazoo working with Alex Chesterman, more of which below (alongside some of our other notable assignments).

We enter 2020 at full pace and look forward to working with investors, clients and candidates in what is set to be another fantastic year.

Below is both a sample of clients, and a brief selection of notable projects that kept us busy in 2019:

Team Build

Renaissance have been working with Cazoo Founder Alex Chesterman since he first set-up Zoopla back in 2008, hiring executives onto his leadership team from inception, through to their IPO in 2014, and right up to the sale of the business to PE giant SilverLake for £2.2bn.

Alex called us in December 2018 to let us know of his plans to disrupt the UK’s used car market with a his new venture called Cazoo - and could we partner with him to help build a world class leadership team of the highest quality, as fast as possible.

Naturally, we jumped at this unique opportunity to build something from complete scratch with one of Europe’s premier entrepreneurs, and fast forwarding the first six months of 2019 Renaissance could reflect on a job well done with 11 industry heavyweights hired into new leadership roles at Cazoo.

These hires included digital technology industry leaders such as; Jonathan Howell (from as CTO, Darren Bentley (from Moneysupermarket) as CCO, Alex Gersh (from Betfair) as CFO, and Piers Stobbs (from Moneysupermarket) as CDO. Leadership hires were also made across functional areas such as Product, Customer Experience, Operations, Talent, Pricing, Logistics and Analytics.

Having now formally launched at the end of December 2019, Cazoo aims to make buying a used car no different to buying any other product online today by letting consumers select from thousands of cars online and have it delivered to their door in as little as 48 hours.

“These hires each bring with them deep retail and digital experience and proven track records in their respective fields. Thanks to the efforts of Renaissance we have now assembled a genuinely world class senior management team at Cazoo, and we are now entirely focused on delivering the UK’s best used car buying experience.”
